Native Mexican traditional medicine to heal the body, mind & spirit
Sofía Díaz Hernández
[English translation] She is a woman of Mayan - Tzotzil origin, a healer from the State of Chiapas in México, she has participated for more than 30 years supporting various organizations and groups that are dedicated to training and disseminating the knowledge of traditional Mexican medicine. She has taught various courses, workshops and diplomas on the following topics: a) The use and preparation of products based on medicinal plants; b) herbal treatments by devices and systems; c) construction and worldview of the temazcalli; d) healing massages, e) traditional Mexican cuisine and e) treatment of diseases considered to have cultural affiliation, for example, the cure of susto and espanto, mal de ojo y caída de mollera. She has transmitted her workshops throughout much of the Mexican Republic and in recent years abroad. She has collaborated as an organizer and teacher in national and regional events, such as the National Medicinal Plant Festival, Tajín Summit, Mexico-Peru Meeting and Traditional Knowledge Meetings. She has been a speaker at book presentations, colloquiums, conferences of universities and secretariats such as the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the University of Guerrero, the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM), SAGARPA and the Secretariat of Development and Equity for Communities (SEDEREC now SEPI). She currently coordinates Mayahuelcalli, a Civil Association in the State of Morelos, responsible for training health providers, through the Popular Community Health Council and the Faculty of Social Studies of the UAEM. Semblanza Es una mujer de origen Maya – Tzotzil, curandera del Estado de Chiapas, ha participado durante más de 30 años apoyando a diversas organizaciones y grupos que se dedican a capacitar y difundir los saberes de la medicina tradicional mexicana. Ha impartido diversos cursos, talleres y diplomados en los siguientes temas: a) El uso y elaboración de productos a base de plantas medicinales; b) tratamientos herbolarios por aparatos y sistemas; c) construcción y cosmovisión de la temazcalli; d) masajes curativos, e) cocina tradicional mexicana y e) tratamiento de enfermedades consideradas como de filiación cultural, por ejemplo, la curación de susto y el espanto, mal de ojo y caída de mollera. Los talleres los ha transmitido en gran parte de la República Mexicana y durante los últimos años en el extranjero. Ha colaborado como organizadora y profesora en eventos nacionales y regionales, como la Fiesta Nacional de la Planta Medicinal, Cumbre Tajín, Encuentro México-Perú y Encuentros de Saberes Tradicionales. Ha sido conferencista y expositora en presentaciones de libros, coloquios, congresos de universidades y secretarías como la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, la Universidad de Guerrero, la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos (UAEM), la SAGARPA y la Secretaría de Desarrollo y Equidad para las Comunidades (SEDEREC ahora SEPI). Actualmente coordina Mayahuelcalli, una Asociación Civil en el Estado de Morelos, encargada en capacitar a promotores de salud, a través del Consejo Popular de Salud Comunitaria y la Facultad de Estudios Sociales de la UAEM. |

CURE OF FEAR/TRADITIONAL CLEANING
Cleansing is a ritual procedure whose purpose is the prevention, diagnosis and/or relief of a wide range of diseases, among them those related to the penetration of filth into the body. Cleaning is done in various ways and with different elements. The most common thing is to pass around the body bouquets of medicinal plants with special characteristics and abilities, to carry out energy mobilization, absorption and neutralization of residual energy and bad influences. HEALING MASSAGE/TRADITIONAL SOBADAS Specific manipulation of the body that refers to a particular conception of the organism and health-disease, which is part of the medical system of Mexican cultures and their cosmology, related to cold and heat. An example of this is: ¨empacho¨, ¨tonada de anginas¨, and ¨juntada de pulse¨. |
CURACIÓN DE SUSTO Y ESPANTO/LIMPIAS TRADICIONALESLIMPIAS
La limpia es un procedimiento ritual cuya finalidad es la prevención, diagnóstico y/o el alivio de un conjunto amplio de enfermedades, entre ellas destacan las concernientes a la penetración de inmundicias en el cuerpo. La limpia se realiza de diversas formas y con distintos elementos. Lo más habitual es pasar alrededor del cuerpo ramos de plantas con características y capacidades especiales, para realizar la movilización energética, absorción y neutralización de energía residual y malas influencias. MASAJE CURATIVO/SOBADAS TRADICIONALES Manipulación específica del cuerpo que remite a una particular concepción del organismo y de la salud-enfermedad, que forma parte del sistema médico de las culturas mexicanas, relacionada al frio y calor. Ejemplo de esto es: ¨empacho¨, ¨tronada de anginas¨, y ¨juntada de pulso¨. |
